Working & Living In Marshland St James

Life & Work

The pace of life very slow and there appears to be little social activity. The only pursuit for young children amounts to a few old fashioned type swings and frames situated on a muddy field which unfortunately exits onto a busy HGV route. There are no teenage pursuits.

For adults there is just the one pub but it is off the main road (Smeeth Road) and is built away from the main population on the edge of a piece of farmland which means a drive to it for most. There is a green painted prefabricated steel village hall. Opposite this is another older prefabricated type building which may be in use but appears boarded up and vandalised.

Work is in short supply and almost anything based in the village or nearby is likely to be taken. Pay is low and the nearest opportunities of any note will mean a drive to Norwich or Cambridge both of which present 140 and 120 mile round trips respectively. Shop work and unskilled labour markets do exist at King’s Lynn and Wisbech. These are nearer at 28 and 18 miles round trips respectively but pay will again be low. Many take the longer drive to King’s Lynn and then take a train to London in order to receive a realistic salary.
